Residual stress measurement in innovative friction stir welding processes
2017
In recent years, important innovations have been introduced in Friction Stir Welding (FSW) technology such as, for example, the Laser assisted Friction Stir Welding (LFSW) and in-process Cooled Friction Stir Welding (CFSW). Residual stresses have a fundamental role in welded structures because they affect the way to design the structures, fatigue life, corrosion resistance and many other material properties. Consequently, it is important to investigate the residual stress distribution in FSW where, though the heat input is lower compared to traditional welding techniques, the constraints applied to the parts to weld are more severe. The aim of the present work is to verify the capabilities …
Laser-assisted narrow gap arc welding of an 18MND5 steel thick plate
2020
Abstract Narrow gap arc welding is a common solution for the welding of thick structures. In this study, a defocused laser beam is used to pre-melt the narrow gap walls in front of an arc-welding bath. Such a welding configuration can be referred to a hybrid welding configuration. In the present work, a particular attention is given to evaluation of the interaction between an arc plasma and a defocused laser beam. High-speed imaging of the metal transfer through arc plasma is achieved thanks to a diode laser illumination system. Electrical arc parameters are logged, synchronously, in order to perform a correlation analysis and to make a diagnosis of the interaction level between laser beam …
Influence of Refraction on Tonometric Readings After Photorefractive Keratectomy and Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis
2000
PURPOSE To determine the decrease of Goldmann tonometry after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and laser assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) according to refraction prior to surgery. METHODS Prospective simultaneous comparative case series of 53 myopic eyes (53 patients) that underwent PRK and 50 (50 patients) that underwent LASIK using the Summit Excimed SVS plus (Summit Technology, Inc., Walthan, MA, U.S.A.). PRK and LASIK were subdivided by refractive error into two subgroups of more than or less than -5 diopters (D). Central tonometric readings were taken prior to surgery and 12 months after surgery. RESULTS In LASIK and PRK subgroups of more than -5 D, 85.7% (24) and 69.6% (24), r…
Femtosecond laser–assisted intrastromal corneal ring segment implantation for high astigmatism correction after penetrating keratoplasty
2013
PURPOSE: To assess the visual and refractive outcomes of femtosecond laser-assisted implanta- tion of Ferrara-type intrastromal corneal ring segments (ICRS) in post-penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) eyes. SETTING: Instituto OftalmolFernOviedo, Spain. DESIGN: Cohort study. METHODS: Patients with previous PKP had ICRS implantation after femtosecond laser tunnel creation. The uncorrected (UDVA) and corrected (CDVA) distance visual acuities and residual refractive errors were recorded before and 6 months after ICRS implantation. The power vector method was used to analyze refractive errors preoperatively and postoperatively. RESULTS: This study enrolled 32 eyes of 30 patients. The mean UDVA (Snell…

Microhardness of demineralized enamel following home bleaching and laser-assisted in office bleaching
2015
Background There is little data regarding the effect of tooth whitening on microhardness of white spot lesions. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of home-bleaching and laser-assisted in-office bleaching on microhardness of demineralized enamel. Material and Methods Forty bovine incisors were selected and immersed in a demineralizing solution for 12 weeks to induce white spot lesions. Enamel blocks were prepared and randomly assigned to two groups of 20 each. The first group underwent home bleaching with 15% carbamide peroxide which was applied for 8 hours a day over a period of 15 days. In the second group, in-office bleaching was performed by 40% hydrogen peroxide and powe…
Irregularity of the posterior corneal surface after curved interface femtosecond laser-assisted versus microkeratome-assisted descemet stripping auto…
2013
During donor tissue preparation for Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK), either microkeratome or femtosecond laser can be used for intrastromal cutting. We compared morphological and functional outcomes after DSAEK using both cutting techniques. In this retrospective study, 22 uneventful DSAEK surgeries were reviewed. Eight donor corneas were prepared for DSAEK using the VisuMax femtosecond laser (Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Jena, Germany). Fourteen corneas were processed using an Amadeus II microkeratome (Ziemer Ophthalmic Systems AG, Port, Switzerland). The postoperative best spectacle-corrected visual acuity was measured. Furthermore, corneal optical coherence tomogra…
The electron wavefunction in laser-assisted bremsstrahlung
2003
The active region for emission of radiation by an electron driven by a strong laser field in the proximity of a stationary scattering centre is localized in space and time. It is argued that the extension of this region can be controlled by changing the velocity of the electron, and that information on this extension is contained in the duration and in the spectrum of the emitted radiation pulse.
Electron Angular Distribution in Laser-Assisted X-ray Photoeffect
1981
Calculations are reported of the differential cross section of the laser-assisted X-ray photoeffect from K shells showing that drastic changes occur in the shape of the ejected-electron angular distribution when laser photons are exchanged during the ionisation. This process appears well suited to the study of laser effects and multiphoton exchanges in laser-assisted atomic collisions.
